Budi Darma, our father of Literature

State University of Surabaya – Budi Darma, the Professor of Faculty of Language and Arts in the State University of Surabaya has been Passed away on 21 August 2021. He also well knewn as a Marvellous and Great writer, proven by many of his work lie Short Story, Novel, essay and many other works of Him. His Death shocked both the world of Indonesian Literature and the University itself because a great teacher and litterateur is gone from this world.

 

 

The Faculty of Language and Arts then conduct an event of Symposium to pay tribute and honour to Budi Darma at 14th of September Via Zoom Video Call and Youtube. The theme of the symposium is “Menuju Dunia Jungkir Balik Budi Darma”. Budi Darma stated if “Dunia Jungkir Balik” is the world which felt so alienated yet tied with another reality. The Faculty also planning to publish a book that contains so many collection of essay which written by Budi Darma itself that will be launched on the 40th day of Budi Darma’s Death. The symposium event was attended by many expert as well as novelist, journalist, critics, writers, and film directors and the students of the Faculty. More than 1000 participant attending the symposium, making the event crowded and exciting. The event opened by the Chancellor of the Unesa, Professor Nurhasana, M.kes. In his opening speech, he have plan to make the Symposium to be an international conference.

In the symposium, many litterateur gave their opinion on Budi Darma view about Literature and its theory and some of them critize about it. Budi Darma point of view is literature must be discussed by literature mean, do not use any other aspect of theme, since it will pollutes the artistic value of the literature itself. Literature as said by one of the writer in the symposium, “Literature is ambiguity according to Budi Darma, because people will interpret the meaning of literature differently.” The perception is what makes the ambiguity since we all does not knew what actually literature is, but that is where the beauty came from.

Budi Darma often uses Chaosmos as his signature type of writing. Chaosmos came from the word “chaos” dan “cosmos” which means about “universe of chaos”, this showing if the writing will not having a certain structure, chaotic, yet artistic. By having not a single doubtless structure it also a structure, which is Paradox in continuity. In his “world of Randomness”, as stated by Luxembourg “In that text, there will be suprises and magic.” Indicating that there will be things we will not expect and knew about his Chaosmos, as in other of his text are result of his Neurosis expression and his suppressed desire even he as the writer himself does not aware of, as stated by Freud.

Budi Darma loves reading and writing Poetry, as said by one of his old colleagues if he would be relieved after reading one of poetry, as reading poetry is a must to gave peace in mind and soul. When comes to writing, Budi Darma are very creative person, as how he manage to finish short story of “Laki-laki tua tanpa nama” in a very short time in his book “Orang-orang Bloomington.” And then finishing again another short story “Joshua Karabish.” How his mind and soul able to create such arts were very fascinating, as he stated if a writer does not need a preparation to write but also a writer who able to write will unable to wrote without a preparation. What he said about preparation is not just a pencil and a paper, but hearts, mind, and experience, also a bit touch of sensitivity. A true writer does not explain about the flow, let the writings do all the things.
